A new report from International Tourism Partnership has demonstrated the vital role hotel companies can play in widening access to clean water and sanitation globally.

In a new report, the International Tourism Partnership outline some simple steps for hotel companies to follow to improve overall water stewardship practices, taking into account the access to clean water and sanitation of the communities they are operating in.

Access to clean water, sanitation and adequate facilities are undoubtedly critical to the success of the hospitality industry. Our recent article about an eco-homestay in Nepal, which received funding from the HSBC Water Programme, reflected how the ability to provide adequate clean water and sanitation is fundamental to the success of the homestays. Without these basic facilities functioning well, hosts found it very difficult to attract guests to the properties.

The productivity of a business is intrinsically linked to the communities in which it, and its suppliers, operate. Future threats to water access, sanitation and hygiene could cause disruption within hotels, for example, staff being impacted by water-related illnesses caused by water scarcity, use of dirty water, poor sanitation and lack of hygiene.

Through working closely with suppliers to build resilience against the threat of water shortages and creating manageable action plans, hotels are in a unique position to improve access to clean water and sanitation. Have a read of the report to find out more.
