The Mara River in East Africa is one of five priority water basins that WWF focuses its environmental work as part of the HSBC Water Programme. Funded by HSBC, WWF is working with government, businesses and people to ensure that companies, communities and rivers are healthy.
The Mara River winds through Kenya and Tanzania, flowing into Lake Victoria. The river traverses the Masai Mara Game Reserve and the Serengeti National Park which are home to many rare and iconic species. One of nature’s greatest spectacles happens in the Mara basin every summer when more than 1.3 million zebras and wildebeests cross the savannah plains on migration. The river is exceptionally important for the wildlife, tourism and the people who live there.
